Since its inception in 2004, the Indo-German-Swiss e-Waste Initiative has achieved the following milestones:
improved awareness
- Three WEEE Care! Initiative workshops in Bangalore, supported by the Goethe Institute
- National e-waste workshop in Delhi on World Environment Day ‘05, hosted by MoEF.
improved stakeholder engagement
- Formation of the E-waste Agency (EWA) brings together industry, government and NGO to work on a sustainable e-waste management strategy for Bangalore.
- First national e-waste workshop held in March 2004, defining a ‘Way Forward’.
- First national workshop on e-waste guidelines held in Bangalore in May 2006, organized by the MoEF.
improved recycling capacity
- First authorized formal recycling unit in Bangalore starts pilot run.
- Profitable Environmental Management Training (PREMA) carried out with a small group of informal recyclers in Bangalore. They have now formed an association called ECO-BIRD.
improved estimates of e-waste
- Rapid assessments in Delhi and Bangalore of the quantities being generated, and identification of the e-waste recycling hot-spots.
- National level desk study to assess e-waste quantities
