Association for Stimulating Know-How (ASK) and Verité are holding a Multi Stake holder consultation on “Social and Environmental Issues in the IT Sector” on 23rd and 26th July 2005 at New Delhi and 30th July at Bangalore. This consultation is the follow up of a research study on the “Social (including Labour and community relations) and Environmental Issues in the IT sector”.
The objectives of this consultation are two fold;
  • To create awareness regarding the key social and environmental issues as a result of the IT sector amongst the key stakeholders
  • To formulate an action plan to address the key issues identified through a process of consultation amongst government, industry, NGOs, employees and trade association within the IT sector.
Since 1992 ASK has provided leadership and support to institutions across India who are working to achieve and sustain visible socio-economic development. In 2003 Verité, a U.S. based NGO whose mission is to ensure people worldwide work under safe, fair and legal working conditions, began a 3 year research study on labor rights in five countries. ASK, who operates Verité’s South Asia Regional office, was selected to undertake this study of the IT sector in India.

The IT sector in India has been increasingly on the global map in the recent years. There has a boom in the sector in the financial terms and it is imperative at this juncture to understand the holistic impact of this sector with respect to the triple bottom line: social, environmental and economic. This project has brought forth certain findings depicting the social and environmental aspects and how IT sector is presently responding to these key issues.

This multi stakeholder consultation will take a step forward to analyze the research findings and identify possible solutions to address the key issues. This consultation will include the following stakeholders from Computer Electronic and E-waste sector:
  • Practicing Industry representatives
  • Trade Association representatives
  • Related Government Officials
  • Non Governmental organizations working in the sector
